Abstract

We present the observed/intrinsic optical parameters and the variability analysis of the Naked-Eye Burst, GRB 080319B, observed by the TORTORA wide-field optical monitoring system. The event is extreme not only in observed properties but also intrinsically: it is the most luminous event ever recorded at optical wavelengths. The temporal properties suggest short-lived periodic activities of the internal engine. This is the fastest optically variable source detected at cosmological distances.

Abstract

We study here the Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) environment through the analysis of the optical absorption features due to the gas surrounding the GRB. In particular, we analyze high resolution spectroscopic observations of GRB080319B and GRB080330 taken with UVES at the VLT, starting 8m30s and 1.5hr after the GRB trigger, respectively. The spectra show that the ISM of the GRB host galaxies are complex, with several components contributing to the host absorption system. ast four components contributing to the main absorption system. In addition, we detect strong excited absorption lines, from which we derive information on the gas distance from the site of the GRB explosion. Under the assumption that the excited features are produced by indirect UV pumping, we found that this distance results to be 2-6 kpc for GRB080319B and $280\pm50$ pc for GRB080330, meaning that the power of the GRB radiation can influence the conditions of the interstellar medium up to a distance of several hundred pc.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to investigate the properties of the intervening absorbers lying along the line of sight of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) 080319B through the analysis of its optical absorption features. To this purpose, we analyze a multi-epoch, high resolution spectroscopic observations (R=40000, corresponding to 7.5 km/s) of the optical afterglow of GRB080319B (z=0.937), taken with UVES at the VLT. Thanks to the rapid response mode (RRM), we observed the afterglow just 8m:30s after the GRB onset when the magnitude was R ~ 12. This allowed us to obtain the best signal-to-noise, high resolution spectrum of a GRB afterglow ever (S/N per resolution element ~ 50). Two further RRM and target of opportunity observations were obtained starting 1.0 and 2.4 hours after the event, respectively. Four MgII absorption systems lying along the line of sight to the afterglow have been detected in the redshift range 0.5 < dz =" 0.9,"> Bibtex entry for this abstract Preferred format for this abstract (see Preferences)

Abstract

Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are widely believed to be highly-collimated explosions (opening angle theta ~ 1-10 deg). As a result of this beaming factor, the true energy release from a GRB is usually several orders of magnitude smaller than the observed isotropic value. Measuring this opening angle, typically inferred from an achromatic steepening in the afterglow light curve (a "jet" break), has proven exceedingly difficult in the Swift era. Here we undertake a study of five of the brightest (in terms of the isotropic prompt gamma-ray energy release, E(gamma, iso)) GRBs in the Swift era to search for jet breaks and hence constrain the collimation-corrected energy release. We present multi-wavelength (radio through X-ray) observations of GRBs 050820A, 060418, and 080319B, and construct afterglow models to extract the opening angle and beaming-corrected energy release for all three events. Together with results from previous analyses of GRBs 050904 and 070125, we find evidence for an achromatic jet break in all five events, strongly supporting the canonical picture of GRBs as collimated explosions. The most natural explanation for the lack of observed jet breaks from most Swift GRBs is therefore selection effects. However, the opening angles for the events in our sample are larger than would be expected if all GRBs had a canonical energy release of ~ 10e51 erg. The total energy release we measure for those "hyper-energetic" (E(total) >~ 10e52 erg) events in our sample is large enough to start challenging models with a magnetar as the compact central remnant.

Abstract

We present observations of the afterglow of GRB 080319B at optical, mm and radio frequencies from a few hours to 67 days after the burst. Present observations along with other published multi-wavelength data have been used to study the light-curves and spectral energy distributions of the burst afterglow. The nature of this brightest cosmic explosion has been explored based on the observed properties and it's comparison with the afterglow models. Our results show that the observed features of the afterglow fits equally good with the Inter Stellar Matter and the Stellar Wind density profiles of the circum-burst medium. In case of both density profiles, location of the maximum synchrotron frequency $\nu_m$ is below optical and the value of cooling break frequency $\nu_c$ is below $X-$rays, $\sim 10^{4}$s after the burst. Also, the derived value of the Lorentz factor at the time of naked eye brightness is $\sim 300$ with the corresponding blast wave size of $\sim 10^{18}$ cm. The numerical fit to the multi-wavelength afterglow data constraints the values of physical parameters and the emission mechanism of the burst.

Abstract

The "Pi of the Sky" prototype apparatus observed prompt optical emission from extremely bright GRB080319B since the very beginning of the gamma emission. The burst occurred at redshift z=0.937 and set the record of optical luminosity reaching 5.3 mag. The position of the burst was observed before, during and after the explosion by several telescopes and unprecedented coverage of optical light curve has been achieved. The combination of these unique optical data with simultaneous gamma-ray observations provides a powerful diagnostic tool for the physics of the GRB explosion within seconds of its start. The "Pi of the Sky" prototype, working since 2004 in Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, consists of 2 cameras observing same 20x20 deg^2 fields in the sky with time resolution of 10 seconds. The prototype reacts to GCN alerts, but it has also its own algorithm for identification of optical flashes. The final system covering field of view of Swift or Fermi satellite will consist of 2 arrays of 16 cameras installed in a distance of about 100 km. The system is currently under construction. It will be a powerful tool for early optical observations of GRBs, allowing for optical observation of GRBs before, during and after the gamma emission. With the on-line data analysis in real time, it will identify short optical flashes autonomously and will be able to distribute this information among the community. In this contribution the general idea of the final version of the experiment and the most interesting results from the prototype are presented.

AbstractWe report on a search with the IceCube detector for high-energy muon neutrinos from GRB 080319B, one of the brightest gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) ever observed. The fireball model predicts that a mean of 0.12 events should be detected by IceCube for a bulk Lorentz boost of the jet of 300. In both the direct on-time window of 66s and an extended window of about 300s around the GRB, there was no excess found above the background. The 90% C.L. upper limit on the number of track-like events from the GRB is 2.7, corresponding to a muon neutrino fluence limit of 9.0x10^-3 erg cm^-2 in the energy range between 145TeV and 2.1PeV, which contains 90% of the expected events.

AbstractWe report on observations of correlated behavior between the prompt gamma-ray and optical emission from GRB 080319B, which confirm that (i) they occurred within the same astrophysical source region and (ii) their respective radiation mechanisms were dynamically coupled. Our results, based upon a new CCF methodology for determining the time-resolved spectral lag, are summarized as follows. First, the evolution in the arrival offset of prompt gamma-ray photon counts between Swift-BAT 15-25 keV and 50-100 keV energy bands (intrinsic gamma-ray spectral lag) appears to be anti-correlated with the arrival offset between prompt 15-350 keV gamma-rays and the optical emission observed by TORTORA (extrinsic optical/gamma-ray spectral lag), thus effectively partitioning the burst into two main episodes at ~T+28+/-2 sec. Second, the rise and decline of prompt optical emission at ~T+10+/-1 sec and ~T+50+/-1 sec, respectively, both coincide with discontinuities in the hard to soft evolution of the photon index for a power law fit to 15-150 keV Swift-BAT data at ~T+8+/-2 sec and ~T+48+/-1 sec. These spectral energy changes also coincide with intervals whose time-resolved spectral lag values are consistent with zero, at ~T+12+/-2 sec and ~T+50+/-2 sec. These results, which are robust across heuristic permutations of Swift-BAT energy channels and varying temporal bin resolution, have also been corroborated via independent analysis of Konus-Wind data. This potential discovery may provide the first observational evidence for an implicit connection between spectral lags and GRB emission mechanisms in the context of canonical fireball phenomenology. Future work includes exploring a subset of bursts with prompt optical emission to probe the unique or ubiquitous nature of this result.

Title: Naked-eye optical flash from GRB 080319B: Tracing the decaying neutrons in the outflow
Comments: 4 pages, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. D as a Rapid Communication
Journal-ref: Phys. Rev. D 79, 021301(R) (2009)
Subjects: Astrophysics (astro-ph)

For an unsteady baryonic gamma-ray burst (GRB) outflow, the fast and slow proton shells collide with each other and produce energetic soft gamma-ray emission. If the outflow has a significant neutron component, the ultra-relativistic neutrons initially expand freely until decaying at a larger radius. The late time proton shells ejected from the GRB central engine, after powering the regular internal shocks, will sweep these $\beta-$decay products and give rise to very bright UV/optical emission. The naked-eye optical flash from GRB 080319B, an energetic explosion in the distant universe, can be well explained in this way.

Abstract

The two brightest and so far the best studied gamma ray bursts (GRBs), 990123 and 080319B, were ordinary, highly collimated GRBs produced in a core collapse supernova explosion within a high-density wind environment and observed from a very near-axis viewing angle. Inverse Compton scattering (ICS) and synchrotron radiation (SR), the two dominant radiation mechanisms in the cannonball (CB) model of GRBs, together with the burst environment, provide a very simple and sufficiently accurate description of the multiwavelength lightcurves of their prompt and afterglow emissions.

Abstract

The Swift-discovered GRB080319B was by far the most distant source ever observed at naked eye brightness, reaching a peak magnitude of 5.3 at a redshift of z=0.937. We present our late time optical and X-ray observations, which confirm that an achromatic break occurred in the power-law afterglow light curve at ~10^6 s post-burst. This most likely indicates that the gamma-ray burst (GRB) outflow was collimated, which for a uniform jet would imply a total energy in the jet E_{jet} \gsim 10^{52.5} erg. Our observations also show a late-time excess of red light, which is well explained if the GRB was accompanied by a supernova, similar to those seen in some other long-duration GRBs. The latest observations are dominated by light from the host and show that the GRB took place in a faint dwarf galaxy (r(AB) = 27.2, rest-frame M_B = -17.3). This galaxy is small even by the standards of other GRB hosts, which is suggestive of a low metallicity environment.

Abstract

We show that the excellent optical and gamma-ray data available for GRB 080319B rule out the internal shock model for the prompt emission. The data instead point to a model in which the observed radiation was produced close to the deceleration radius ($\sim10^{17}$ cm) by a turbulent source with random Lorentz factors $\sim10$ in the comoving frame. The optical radiation was produced by synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons, and the gamma-rays by inverse Compton scattering of the synchrotron photons. The gamma-ray emission originated both in eddies and in an inter-eddy medium, whereas the optical radiation was mostly from the latter. Therefore, the gamma-ray emission was highly variable whereas the optical was much less variable. The model explains all the observed features in the prompt optical and gamma-ray data of GRB 080319B. We are unable to determine with confidence whether the energy of the explosion was carried outward primarily by particles (kinetic energy) or magnetic fields. Consequently, we cannot tell whether the turbulent medium was located in the reverse shock (we can rule out the forward shock) or in a Poynting-dominated jet.

Abstract

The extremely bright optical flash that accompanied GRB 080319B suggested, at first glance, that the prompt $\gamma$-rays in this burst were produced by Synchrotron self Compton (SSC). We analyze here the observed optical and $\gamma$ spectrum. We find that the very strong optical emission poses, due to self absorption, very strong constraints on the emission processes and put the origin of the optical emission at a very large radius, almost inconsistent with internal shock. Alternatively it requires a very large random Lorentz factor for the electrons. We find that SSC could not have produced the prompt $\gamma$-rays. We also show that the optical emission and the $\gamma$ rays could not have been produced by synchrotron emission from two populations of electron within the same emitting region. Thus we must conclude that the optical and the $\gamma$-rays were produced in different physical regions. A possible interpretation of the observations is that the $\gamma$-rays arose from internal shocks but the optical flash resulted from external shock emission. This would have been consistent with the few seconds delay observed between the optical and $\gamma$-rays signals.
